Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mother. She grew up with her mother's family. She claimed that her skin color was a reason for her feeling excluded by her peers when she was growing up. Her parents were struggling financially and were forced to move sixteen times in order to take on her father's work. Russell said that despite the hardships it was always the chance to reinvent yourself, to develop something new. Russell's parents were financially struggling and she was always traveling. Russell was only 18 when she took her first acting class. She used the money she earned from work to purchase a car and drove off to Los Angeles to audition. As her funds ran out then she would go back home to work until she earned enough to go back to the audition. This was the way she worked for four more years until she was offered her first TV part.
